What the world needs now...

Dear Friend,

I was sitting here remembering when one of my sons growing up was very difficult to get up in the morning. He was not a morning person. Morning's turned very difficult. He would often throw tantrums and refused to get dressed. He would get in to all sorts of things. At that time I was a single mom of two. I lived in Michigan and I had a 45 minute drive to Detroit for work. I didn't have time for tantrums in the morning. I had to get them fed and to school so that I could go to work on time. He didn't care about that. One day I was explaining to one of my friends what happens in the morning. He asked me what usually wound up happening, I was honest and told him it usually ended in a spanking. He said I want to suggest something to you. "Instead of spanking him in the morning, i want you to try loving on him more." When you wake him up, wake him up with hugs and love." I stared at the phone for a minute I was so desperate, I decided to give it a try.

The next morning I tried it, I woke him up, put him in my lap and just loved on him. It worked! He didn't scream or cry, he allowed me to get him dressed and ready for breakfast. Of course I didn't know if it would work until I tried it again. You know what, it worked and it worked until he left my house. Romans 12:9-10 says, "Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves." I had to learn to devote time to him in the morning, sure it wasn't convenient, his attitude wasn't lovely but for us to achieve or have a good day it was necessary. I had to go out of my way to love him, but it worked and changed the course of our day. In 1965, Jackie Deshannon would sing a song, "What the World Needs Now is Love." (later sung by several others). The lyrics to the song were simple (I am paraphrasing) we don't need anything else created, we just need more love, it's the one thing that this world is missing. I agree, we don't need more rules, policies, conditions and terms. We need more love, we need to practice and pursue the ways of love like never before. Love changes things.
