Distracted

March 17, 2020

Dear Friend,

My weekends are for resting, spending time with family and friends, and preparing for the week ahead.  This past weekend, many responsibilities and obligations demanded I address each one of them.  I created a long “To Do” list to ensure I finished each task satisfactorily.  First on the list was to wake up early Saturday morning  and spend time with God by reading His word, praying, worshipping, and reviewing my notes from past messages.  Saturday morning came and the loud fire alarm sound from my alarm awaked me.  On the infamous “To Do” list, I allotted 1.5 hours to spend time with God.  About 15 minutes into my time with God, I became distracted.  I assumed I could multi-task and get more on my list accomplished in less time.  I started a load of laundry and loaded the dishwasher.  The first part of my days should have been focused on spending intimate time with God.  Instead, I cut my time short with distractions and things I deemed necessary.  The remainder of my day did not go according to my “To Do” list.  As I reflected on the weekend, I realized I was being Martha instead of being more like Mary.

Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught.  But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing.  She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work?  Tell her to come and help me.”  But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details.  There is only one thing worth being concerned about.  Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”  Luke 10: 39-42

Distractions easily occur.  We are distracted by social media, chores, phone calls, text messages, television, and a plethora of over things.  We consciously know we should live a Matthew 6:33 life and seek the kingdom of God first…..but is that what we actually do?  If we seek His kingdom first by spending time with Him, He will show us what is actually important on the “To Do” list.

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.  Matthew 6:33
