He is Essential by C. Rose

Dear Friends,

Luke 10:41-42 message bible, “The Master said, “Martha, dear Martha, you’re fussing far too much and getting yourself worked up over nothing. One thing only is essential, and Mary has chosen it—it’s the main course, and won’t be taken from her.”

Jesus had gone to visit his friend Martha and Mary. Martha chose (her choice) to cook the main course for Jesus, but Mary chose the main course as Jesus. Like Martha many of us have gotten distracted from what is essential to our very lives. While we may see others taking a seat at the feet of Jesus, we somehow this think we have to stay in busy-ness. This story of Martha and Mary, is not a story to make us feel guilt or ashamed from choosing to cook for our loves ones, for choosing to keep our homes clean, nor is it telling us not to be productive in our daily lives. Colossian 3:23 NIV say, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,”. The word confirms that both work and ambition are good things. Really what it comes down to is our heart, our motives, and our priorities.

There is a time to sit still, and rest in God’s presence, and there is also a time to work and get things done. Our heart, motive, and priorities should have Jesus at the center of each of them. If not we will buy into the lie of busyness, and then feel frustrated when we see others not helping as we think they should. Martha was missing the most important part, th

e relationship.

I remember years ago, if I hosted a family gathering at my home. I was busy cleaning behind everyone, cleaning over them, never really sitting down to enjoy them. Now, my theory was that by the time they would leave, I would be done too. However, I was missing what was essential….”the relationship.” I, pray today in all we do, we choose to sit down for the main course (Jesus).

Choosing What’s Essential First,

Chanda Rose
