Why Not Speak in Tongues?
Why Not Speak in Tongues by LaKisha M. Johnson
Mark 16:17-18 “And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well."
As I began to spend more time with God, more time in the bible and more time asking for the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, I began to think, why don’t more Christian’s speak in tongues? Why isn’t this taught more in certain churches, it’s in the bible. I truly believe that culture dominates in this more than anything, often when we don’t understand something, we reject it from our culture, we won’t receive it because it is foreign to us. But as Christians aren’t we supposed to live biblically, and not culturally. John 17:16, “ They are not of this world, as I am not of it.”, John 18:36, “Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jewish leaders. But now my kingdom is from another place." and Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.” So why not tongues? It’s biblical! It aligns with the Holy Spirit and it is a desire from God for us. 1 Corinthians 14: 1-25, Mark 16:15-18, Acts 2:4-6, 1 Corinthians 12:8-11 all discuss on the importance of the Holy Spirit and tongues in our spiritual lives. So why not speak in tongues? This morning I want to encourage you to dig deeper into the things of God, understand the difference between culture and the biblical way of living for our lives. God has given us a road map so that we may fulfill our kingdom assignment and His will for our lives here on earth. It is up to us to purse it and Him with everything in us. Ephesians 4:30, “And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” The Holy Spirit is our redemption, so why don’t you ask Him to fill you today?
Prayer: Father Your ways are not my ways. Your thoughts are higher than my thoughts. Forgive me for quenching the Holy Spirit, that desires to lead me to all truths. Thank you for the revelation in Your Word, so that I may be all things in you and all things for the kingdom. Give us the wisdom, knowledge and understanding to learn more about you. In Jesus Name. Amen
