Blessed are the Merciful

Blessed Are the Merciful by LaKisha M. Johnson

Matthew 5:7, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.”

I remember one year, I was in a car accident. I hit the back of a lady, I rear ended her in traffic. I was young then and most likely moving too fast. The lady, got out her car, said “it was ok”. She didn’t even call the police. She just asked for my insurance information. I gave it to her. When she filed with my insurance, she didn’t fake injuries or have an excessive claim, she only wanted her bumper fixed. I remember saying to myself, if this ever happens to me, I will make sure I show the same mercy. Some years later, I was rear ended, by a police officer. He was driving to close and not paying attention. I got out the car, and you could tell he was nervous. I knew that this could potentially affect his job. My bumper was barely scratched. I told him it was no big deal, and let’s just go ahead. He kept asking, “Are you sure?”, and I said, “Yes I am sure.” I didn’t realize I would need this mercy shown later. I wound up being in a horrible accident, trying to avoid an accident. The young lady would not accept what my insurance company was offering her. She was suing me as well as the insurance company. I knew she was partially at fault in the accident; I only hit her because she was trying to speed past me, while I avoided an accident. We went through months of litigations, and were supposed to show up to trial, and I never heard from my lawyer. I emailed him one day and he said to me, “It’s all taken care of, they settled.” The lord reminded me of the “seed” of mercy I had sown before. You want mercy, you show mercy.

Being merciful is not just a good deed; it’s the ability to empathize with another person, to feel what they feel. To help people meet their needs, being merciful puts you in another person’s shoes, allows you to have compassion for what they are going through. How do you know you are walking in mercy?

1) When you are merciful you don’t walk around with a critical eye, or something to say about someone. –Matthew 23-23

2) When being merciful gives you a spiritual eye for a thing, even when other’s do wrong- 1 Peter 4: 7-9

3) When being merciful you don’t judge – Matthew 7:2

4) When being merciful means you can forgive without explanation- Matthew 6:14

5) When being merciful means you can love with hope and compassion. - 1 Peter 7-11

Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me to show more mercy. Father forgive me when, I have not walked in mercy, when I have not been grateful or respectful to others. Help me to love more like you love, in Jesus Name . Amen
