According to the Mayo Clinic, hypochondria or health anxiety is defined as a illness anxiety disorder where a person is worrying excessively that they are or may become seriously ill. It’s usually a long term chronic issue that can fluctuate in severity.
Unfortunately, this is not just a health issue. We do this often in our everyday life! We will anticipate the worst based on a few moments of distress or struggle. How many of you remember the character Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh? He was always down and thought the world was coming to an end. There would be a drop of rain and he would declare that he was about to get washed away by a flood! To bring this closer to home I have to catch myself from time to time. I could get a nail in my tire. And instead of saying that it’s an easy fix, I would immediately go down the path of destruction. I’d allow my thoughts to run wild! What if the rim is messed up? Now my tire sensor is probably ruined? What if they take the tire off and find something else? It could get ridiculous in a matter of seconds!
The enemy wants us to be consumed by the ‘symptoms’ of negative moments in life that we eventually declare a result that should never happen! 2 Corinthians 4:18 states that “we don't look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.”
Today, take the time to put the Word on the symptoms and stop declaring a diagnosis that doesn’t even exist! Stop looking for something to be wrong and focus on what’s right! The power of life and death are in the power of your tongue. (See Proverbs 18:21) In those moments, When you find yourself ‘going there’ catch yourself and speak the truth of God’s Word!
