Deep Waters

Dear Friends,

At an early age I learned to swim. I took swimming lesson for several years growing up at both Thrasher Boys Club, and War Memorial Pool. I remember one of our goals was to be able to jump off the high diving board at War Memorial. They have since restructured the pool, however there was a real high diving board that allowed you to jump into the deepest part of the pool. I wanted to say it was at least 12-15 feet deep. This particular day I, had gotten up the nerves to go and jump off the diving board. Several people that I was hanging in the shallow end of the pool with tried to discourage this jump. Reminding me of how deep the water was on that end, and how the water burns your noise when you jump into deep waters, and what if diving I did a belly flop knocking the wind out of myself. Although nervous, their words didn’t discourage this little girl from climbing up the ladder to jump in. My heart was pounding the whole climb up, as I made it to the top. There was no turning back at that point, as others were behind me awaiting their turn. I jumped, going down deep to touch the bottom, and swam back up excited about jumping off the high diving board. No fear, no burning noise, no belly flop, I had conquered the deep end.

Psalms 42:7 says, “Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls.”

I believe the Psalmist David may have been afraid when faced with a bear, a lion, and a giant, but that didn’t stop him from going deeper. As an adult now, I often look back on that fierce little girl who did it afraid and wonder what died in her that now has her playing it safe in the shallow end of my relationships, finances, my vision, plans, and purpose.

It’s time for us to step out into the deep waters as a sign that we truly trust who is calling us deeper.

Do we believe our faith will keep us afloat? Do we believe that an unfailing God will not fail us? Do we believe that the God of restoration wants to restore us? Do we believe that He will contend with what contends with us? Do we believe that He wants to bring us to an expected end? Do we believe He wants to show us miracles, signs, and wonders as we go deeper?

Well if we really believe, what are we waiting on? Jump into the deep!
