Greek Life!

Dear Friend,

Delta Sigma Theta , Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Zeta Phi Beta; Greek culture. Sisterhood, brotherhood, camaraderie, loyalty, and community, who wouldn’t desire such things? It’s clear that these traits are valued because so many pledge and participate. People endure the tasking and grueling requirements of initiation and pledging because once you’re in, you enjoy benefits that only a member is allotted. You pledge your loyalty and are allowed into secret places and shown secret things. You’re in, and thus you gain a different level of protection and are a part of something far bigger than yourself.

How sweet to be fabricated into such a communal affair! There is a sense of pride that comes with this. The feeling of walking around and knowing not every one has what you have. To know you’re special. You have a sense of security that isn’t granted to all.

I felt this sense of ownership reading Psalm 27: 4-6

One thing I ask from the Lord,

this only do I seek:

that I may dwell in the house of the Lord

all the days of my life,

to gaze on the beauty of the Lord

and to seek him in his temple.

For in the day of trouble

he will keep me safe in his dwelling;

he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent

and set me high upon a rock.

Then my head will be exalted

above the enemies who surround me;

at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy;

I will sing and make music to the Lord.

Man! How blessed are we that we have access to His sacred place. That God has granted us access into His club. Being initiated in gives us access to the deepest secrets and ways of God. Secrets which even the enemy has no access

Pledging and becoming a part of Greek culture also grows one’s network. “You need a job, don’t worry?! We have a sister working there who can help you out!” We can make that same parallel in our own faith tradition. Being initiated into this faith opens a door to a community of believers ready to shepherd us on. It gives me great joy to know that I am not alone. That as I live life I can call on my brothers and sisters.

So friends, with pride this week put on your letterman. And if you haven’t already get initiated. I promise we won’t make you run through fields of mud; and it will most definitely be worth it.

Abundantly With Love,

The Anonymous Wife

Psalm 91:1-7

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High

will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

2

I will say[a] to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,

my God, in whom I trust.”

3

For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler

and from the deadly pestilence.

4

He will cover you with his pinions,

and under his wings you will find refuge;

his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.

5

You will not fear the terror of the night,

nor the arrow that flies by day,

6

nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,

nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

7

A thousand may fall at your side,

ten thousand at your right hand,

but it will not come near you.
