Captured in the Moment...
Dear Friend,
How do you capture a moment? For decades we have tried to capture moments.
A blade of grass blowing through the wind. The morning fog that sits on the horizon. The twinkle in a mother’s eye as she meets her child for the very first time. Even the twirl of Aunt Susie’s Sunday dress as she dances to a tune.
Moments.
Moments that are much larger and bigger than ourselves. They move the innermost parts of us and awaken our senses, giving us experiences that lead to the smallest taste of heaven here on earth. These moments connect us to the reflections of God.
“For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts..” Romans 2:14-15
We can’t escape it. So inherently we are drawn to these moments and in an attempt to experience them again and again we try to recreate them. We paint pictures using palettes full of color. We take photos changing our lens and frames and even contorting our bodies to get the perfect angle. We write, cycling our words in and out searching for the perfect one.
And finally we stand back to observe our work. Attending Art galleries, concerts, theaters, and cinema. Hungry to experience these moments again, without really having to experience them. We become so focused on its representation, that we stop looking to experience the source. Satan has successfully distracted us. To lose sight of these moments, to stop experiencing them daily, is to void yourself of the Father’s presence.
“You shall have no other gods before me.” Exodus 20:3
Satan’s goal is to make us forget how present God truly is. To have us so focused on the urgency of life that we become blind to God’s every day miracles.
“The thief's purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” John 10:10
What would it look like to live as Christ did? Slowly. Eating from fig trees, stopping at wells, attending weddings; no specific agenda. And all the while recreating these moments by sharing them with his community. What better way to capture moments than in our souls? What better way to recreate these moments than through community? Taking into each others souls and passing on God-filled moments.
I have challenged myself to live in each “mundane” moment. To open my soul to God’s little miracles. The softness of my sons skin as I pat him to bed. The warmth of the sun on my back as I walk to check the mail. The sweetness of the honey on my toast.
With God’s grace, I vow to capture every moment.
“Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:38-42
SN: I strongly believe that art is a beautiful expression of the God in us. My point is to make and emphasis when we allow art to replace the real deal.
