God is in the Storm!

Spirit Seekers,

“In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”

John 1:1-5

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.”

I drove as quickly and safely as I could down the freeway, trying my best to beat the storm on the horizon. Lightning flashed through the sky as dark clouds approached. I then heard the voice of my son,

“Mommy?”

“Yes son?”

“What is that light in the sky?”

“That’s lightning baby.”

“Mommy the sky is dark and that lightning scares me.”

“Oh sweetheart it seems scary but there’s no need to be afraid.”

“Why not?”

“Mommy’s right here, but most importantly, God is with us.”

“Is God in the sky?”

Before I could answer with my typical and confident yes, the Spirit led me to respond accordingly:

“Well baby, He’s everywhere.”

“Even in the lightning?”

“Yes baby.”

“Even in the storm?”

“Yes baby, God is in the storm.”

We drove the rest of the way home in silence and I sat in awe of the lesson the Spirit had just bestowed on us.

These past several days I have not been able to stop thinking on this..the God of the storm. It has caused me to ember the story of when Peter and the disciples were out fishing and suddenly they are caught in a storm. Jesus, having been on the mountain praying, approaches them on the water...walking. Peter, wanting to know if this was in fact his Master, challenges Him to bring him out onto the water. Jesus calls for him and Peter, like his master, begins to walk on water. I’m also reminded of the other similar story when the disciples are out at sea; this time Jesus is in the boat with them, asleep. “Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him (Matthew 8:23-27)!” What kind of man is this indeed.

In the first book of Genesis and again in John we are reminded of the God of the storm. Whose light shines in the darkness and whose light transforms the darkness. The Hebrew word for breath is the same as wind and spirit. God is in all living things. God has breathed His spirit into the darkness, and into death itself. He has overcome the darkness with his very being; His word, His truth, and His light.

I pray that if you are being called out onto the waters, and the storm is raging around you, that you set your eyes upon Jesus. I pray that you are reminded that the man standing before you is in fact of the God of the storm.

“They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord! Again he said, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.’ Then he breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’” John 20:19-22
