How Will You Worship Today?

Dearest Beloved,

In my writing you will find that I often experience God most in nature. These are (in my opinion) the most untouched or tainted by the world around us. The places most purely inhabited by the spirit other than our own souls. A tree blowing in the wind. A creek flowing upstream. The sound of the bird singing early in the morning before the world has awaken. Each of these moments give me a glimpse into a pure state of worship and praise to our Creator. I envy the earth and its natural ability to connect with the Father and Spirit in this way; but I am also grateful. When I choose to be still and I choose to observe the world around me, these aspects of nature (the trees, the lilies of the valley, the mountains that scrap our skies) teach me how to worship.

At the end of each day we take our sons through a practice of meditation, silence, and then a time of thankfulness. The other day we sat in front of the windows. My son asked if he would be allowed to keep his eyes open today in order to watch the trees while he mediated. I told him yes, and chose to also join him. As we sat still, practicing our breathing and listening to our hearts, I was struck by how powerful the experience was. We watch these trees. We watch as their branches bent to and fro in the wind. Listened as the leaves brushing up against each other created their own beautiful song. Watched how each tree moved to its own song but somehow in harmony with the tree songs surrounding it. It was beautiful. These trees, raised up high, worshipping and dancing before the Creator. It made me wonder: When was the last time I offered up my worship in such a pure and authentic way? When have I used all of me to focus solely on a song to my Creator?

We are often reminded in scripture of what our worship should be.

Sing to the LORD, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day. 24 Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. 25 For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. 26 For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. 27 Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his dwelling place. 28 Ascribe to the LORD, all you families of nations, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 29 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him. Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness. 30 Tremble before him, all the earth! The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved. 31 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let them say among the nations, “The LORD reigns!”

1 Chronicles 16:23-31

“Speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord,”

Ephesians 5:19

“Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. 2 The LORD has made his salvation known and revealed his righteousness to the nations. 3 He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. 4 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; 5 make music to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing, 6 with trumpets and the blast of the ram’s horn— shout for joy before the LORD, the King. 7 Let the sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.”

Psalm 98:1-7

“Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: “ ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’who was, and is, and is to come.” 9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: 11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”

Revelation 4:8-11

With your body, with your spirit, with your life, how will you choose to worship our creator today? What song will you sing? What dance will you dance? Our father deserves all the praise for the simple fact that you woke up this morning, have air in your lungs, and can read these words. So again I ask, what is your worship for Him to be today?

I challenge you to be still this week. I challenge you to praise our Father with your entire being at least once a day. Practice this worship until it becomes so natural that you move from a space of worship in all you do; just as the trees and the birds and the lilies of the valley seem to do each and every day.
